About WarioParty

WarioParty started with something I had been doing long before it became a business: playing and collecting retro video games.

I grew up in the 1980s, when the NES was the center of my gaming world. I built up a very large physical NES collection, along with a more moderate collection of SNES and N64 games. These weren't just things sitting on a shelf. They were the games I grew up playing, and over the years I've always had a soft spot for the hardware and games of that era.

I also studied computer programming in Ontario, which eventually gave me the technical background to start experimenting with the hardware I already enjoyed.

WarioParty began as a side business. I started buying some of the retro-style re-release systems being produced by companies like Nintendo and Sega and experimenting with ways to expand what they could do.

That turned out to be more complicated than I expected.

I could get additional games running, but some games wouldn't work properly. Others had various compatibility problems. The more I experimented, the more I realized that simply putting a huge library of games onto a device wasn't enough. It had to actually work.

That led me to a fairly simple idea:

There should be a better option for people who love retro games but don't want to spend their time fighting with emulation.

That's what WarioParty eventually became.

Rather than simply selling a box with games on it, I wanted to build systems around the original hardware wherever possible, test them, modify them, and make them something that a person could plug into their television and actually enjoy.

Today, WarioParty is still a small Canadian business. I personally work on the systems, experiment with the hardware, and figure out ways to make these old consoles more useful without losing what made them special in the first place.

But WarioParty has also become something more personal to me.

I'm a dad, and my youngest daughter has a rare genetic condition called Xia-Gibbs syndrome. She's three years old, and life with her has given me a very different perspective on time, family and the importance of small moments.

That's one of the reasons I like the idea of putting these old systems back into people's homes.

A video game console can be just a piece of electronics. But it can also be the thing that brings a family together on a Saturday night. It can introduce a child to a game their parent grew up playing. It can bring back memories for someone who hasn't held an original controller in decades.

Those little moments are what make the hobby worthwhile to me.

WarioParty isn't a large corporation with a warehouse full of anonymous products. It's a small Canadian business built around something I've loved since I was a kid, and I'm grateful every time someone decides to purchase something I've worked on.
